At Heart
Our Philosophy
At Yoga Centered, we strive to provide a space in which people can develop and grow as individuals, and can positively impact their families and communities through the practice of yoga.
Our History
Hilo’s first “official” Yoga Studio, Yoga Centered, was established in March of 2002. Our first location was tucked behind the farmer’s market downtown, in an alley with no street sign, behind a door with no address and up 3 flights of stairs. My name is Cori Martinez (the owner) and I often joke that students needed to have the secret password to find us.
When each mat was laid out perfectly, 12 students could fit in the studio. It was only a few months before we regularly had 12 students in class. (For those of you who have attended my class before, yes, this was the start of my “staggered mat” philosophy.) Never more than 12 showed up, until my husband and I decided to take out the office space and expand the studio to fit 17 students. The very next class, 17 students practiced together on perfectly staggered mats!
In December of 2004, Yoga Centered expanded into our current location at 37 Waianuenue Ave. Home of a 1,000sq. ft. yoga studio and beautiful boutique. Street level with an address! Our very first class (seriously) had the maximum occupancy of 40 students! -A sure sign that the Hilo community was open to exploring the yoga path.
We thank the Hilo community for your support and look forward to continued growth and yoga practice together!
Aloha,
Cori Martinez
